We loved making these easy DIY Snowflake Ornaments for our Christmas tree and are going to make more for gifts this year! They are so elegant and beautiful as a homemade holiday decoration, but easy enough that kids can help with them too.
We love making things to decorate our home for the Christmas season. I guess it makes it feel so much more personal and homey to me than if everything was store-bought. It just feels like Christmas when we start making things.
Some of our favorite projects that we still use are my favorite DIY star tree topper, this beautiful set of free printable village luminaries, and we always make these beautiful dried orange slices.
Supplies
This easy project only uses a few supplies that can be found at most craft stores. They are supplies you can also use for a variety of other Christmas decor projects.
You will need:
- clear glass ornaments- any size, but I used the 3"
- glass glitter*
- glitter glue
- gold paint pen** (or here)
- ribbon
I found the glass ornaments at Michael's, but you can find them at most craft stores during the holiday season.
*I really like this glass glitter. I used the color gold, which I would say is actually more like a silver with a slightly antique golden patina. It is really beautiful and vintage looking.
**I tried out a number of gold paint pens and this one, by far, is the best! It has the most true gold metallic finish.
How to Make DIY Snowflake Ornaments
Step 1: Draw Snowflakes on the Ornaments
First, ready your paint pen by following the instructions on the package. I recommend practicing once or twice on a scrap piece of cardboard before painting on the glass. You can go as simple or complex as you would like, but I show here the easy way that I like to do it.
To draw the snowflake, follow these easy steps:
First, choose one side of the clear glass ornament and, holding firmly in one hand, draw a big plus sign as pictured below.
Next, draw an X through the center of your plus sign. I like to make the edges slightly shorter than the lines of the plus-sign sides.
Next, draw Vs in between each of the spokes of the snowflake. These don't have to be perfect at all!
Last, draw two additional Vs on each spoke of the snowflake as pictured below. You can always add more detail, but I prefer this simple snowflake.
Step 2: Add Glass Glitter to the Top
The last thing I like to do to these ornaments (to any ornaments I make, really) is to add glass glitter to the top. The top that comes on these plain glass ormanents are just a tad plain and I think adding the glass glitter really makes them feel special.
I use basically the same technique as I did in my DIY ceramic glitter glass ornaments. If you use the glue I suggested, it has a finite enough spout that you can just add the glue directly to the top with easy detail.
After I add the glue to the top, I just pour the glass glitter over the top and dump off the excess.
Step 3: Add Ribbon
The last step is to just add a ribbon to hang the ornament. I liked this ticking stripes one, but a red or cream velvet or gold satin would be really beautiful as well. You could easily customize this to coordinate with your other Christmas tree decor.
