An easy and elegant, vintage inspired DIY Christmas ornament with German glass glitter top and ceramic base accented with beautiful velvet ribbon.
I ran across these sweet plain ceramic ornaments at the craft store and knew just how I wanted to take them up a notch for my vintage inspired bedroom Christmas tree with German glass glitter and velvet accents! You can see the coordinating vintage Santa ornaments (with free printable) HERE.
Supplies:
- Gel Glue (found HERE) or Glittering Glue (found HERE)
- Ceramic Ornaments or other ornaments (Hobby Lobby or HERE)
- Antique silver paint (found HERE or HERE)
- German Glass Glitter (buy HERE)
- paint brush
- Velvet Ribbon (I found mine randomly at Homegoods, but there are some beautiful ones HERE)
Step One: Paint Over the Gold Ornament Top
I used a paint brush to paint over the gold tops of my ornaments with a metallic warm silver paint. The gold was pretty, but it was a bit too bright to match with my Christmas decor since I use mostly muted and silver mercury glass ornaments. I just used a paint brush I had on hand and ended up doing two coats. I liked that the gold still showed a little bit through the silver. It added a really pretty dimension to the ornament.
Step Two: Add Glue for German Glass Glitter
I used another paint brush that I had on hand to paint on the gel glue for my German glass glitter. I painted the top and sides fairly thick so it would really grab ahold of the heavy glitter pieces.
Step Three: Roll into Glass Glitter
I filled the lid of the glass glitter container and rolled the glue covered tops of the ornaments into it, making sure to press each of the sides until covered. I did this on top of a piece of plain paper so any spillage would be easy to pour back into my glitter container for later use. A little bit of this glass glitter really goes a long way!
I think the result is so elegant and pretty!
Step Four: Add Ribbon
I tied a very vintage feeling velvet ribbon on my ornaments so they will hang easily from the tree. I loved this ribbon because it was so elegant and pretty and it matched the other ornaments on my tree. You could use any ribbon here to customize to match your tree.
I just used a slip knot to tie my ribbon.
And that's it! I can't wait to get these beauties hung on the full sized Christmas tree in my room!
