Tips for Buying Christmas Ornaments
Before I share my tips for elevating cheap Christmas ornaments, lets talk a little but about my tips for when you spend and when you save on Christmas ornaments. I have a little criteria that I use when shopping for Christmas ornaments:
Invest in the Christmas Ornaments You'll Keep the Longest
I recommend investing in the Christmas ornaments you will be keeping for a long time, or forever. For me, this is my mercury glass ornaments. I add to my collection each year and at this point, I only add the ones that I really love or that are really special. Invest in your neutral ornaments that will always match any other decor you may add to your Christmas trees.
Sprinkle in the Cheap Christmas Ornaments and Decor
Look for less expensive options for anything that will be trendy, make a statement, or add an accent color to the tree. Changing up trees from year to year can be fun and there are ways to do it without breaking the bank! Add a different ribbon, inexpensive floral picks or add a new color through cheaper ornaments.
I will show you a few ideas for how to elevate basic cheap Christmas ornaments to make them look more expensive than they really are!
How to Elevate Cheap Christmas Ornaments
DIY Christmas Ornaments- Making DIY Christmas ornaments can add the perfect touch to a tree. It is not only a cost saver, but it makes your tree so much more unique than all if you had just bought everything. The sky is the limit!
Paint Cheap Christmas Ornaments
One of the easiest things to do to elevate a inexpensive Christmas ornaments is to add paint!
Have you ever noticed that a lot of the more expensive ornaments have a substantial top on them, often black. If your cheaper ones are glass, the little silver tops can usually be popped out pretty easily. Lay them out on a covered surface and give a quick dusting of black spray paint. Within minutes, your top looks more substantial and upgraded!
I got these green ones from Walmart and they were very inexpensive. Changing the color of the tops made all the difference!
Sometimes if the actual ornament color is just a little bit off, you can also dry brush on a light coat of paint. For example, these ornaments were also from Walmart, but a little too shiny for the look I wanted so I lightly brushed them (some with just my finger) with a mix of metallic paints and painted their tops black as well. This instantly gave them a more muted and substantial look, like the ornaments I had been seeing for five times the cost.

I love to add a line of glass glitter, ribbon, bells, or other special touches to make them even more special.
Add Glass Glitter
One way to elevate any cheap Christmas ornament is to add glass glitter. I use it for everything during the Christmas season.
This is not your normal glitter- it is a million times more beautiful (in my opinion). It is made from actual glass and reflects the light in a dazzling way. It is a small investment and a little goes a very long way. And the best part- the patina it gets over time is just so beautiful!
For this ornament, I started with inexpensive ornaments from Hobby Lobby and wanted to give them a little something special. I have been using them on my trees for years now and love them just as much. You can see the full tutorial for my DIY Ceramic Glitter Glass Ornaments for all of the details to make your own!
Hang with Beautiful Ribbon
I just love the way beautiful ribbons can elevate a Christmas ornament. I usually hang my bigger ornaments with metal hooks to keep them firmly in place, but I like to add a pop of pattern, color, or texture with a beautiful ribbon to hang the smaller and more inexpensive ornaments. You can shop some of my very favorite ribbons here.
Some of my favorite ribbons to use:
- Velvet (always and forever)
- Striped ribbon
- A color to match my decor
- This beautiful Chiffon
- Twine
- Satin
