About Sweet Potato Bites
Your traditional holiday sweet potato side dish gets a make over! Bite-sized pieces of sweet potatoes are coated in a spicy, sweet, and buttery glaze. They are done baking when the potatoes are tender, with the edges getting just a tad crisped from the butter and sugars. Here's the best part - each round of potato is individually topped with a marshmallow that is broiled until it gets that roasted marshmallow color and flavor! Finish with a pecan for a delicious and darling sweet potato dish that can be served as an appetizer, side dish, and even dessert!
Eat with a fork or eat with your fingers, there's no right or wrong way. I love that with these bites, every single piece of sweet potato gets its fair share of sauce, marshmallows and pecans! Every single bite has tradition baked right in.

- Mixing Bowl
- Sturdy Knife
Ingredients for Sweet Potato Bites
These are the same ingredients as you would use for traditional for a traditional sweet potato side dish.
Sweet Potatoes, medium - Choose firm ones with smooth skin that isn't discolored
Butter, melted
Maple Syrup - Real maple syrup, not flavored pancake syrup
Sugar - White granulated sugar, but you could also use light brown sugar for more caramel flavor.
Ground Cinnamon
Kosher Salt
Marshmallows, large
Pecans, halves - you can use other nuts, but I think pecans are the best.
Cooking Spray
How to Make Sweet Potato Bites
The full printable recipe is below.
This recipe can be made in a few simple steps:
- Clean your potatoes, then peel them, and slice them into 1/4" thick rounds.
- Mix melted butter, maple syrup, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
- Toss rounds in the butter mixture.
- Place potatoes on a greased pan, each slice laying flat on the baking sheet.
- Bake in a preheated oven until tender - about 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Remove baking sheet from oven and switch oven to broil.
- Top each bite with a marshmallow and broil until puffed and golden. Watch carefully so as not to burn them.
- Immediately top each marshmallow with a pecan half and serve. Gently press pecan half into the marshmallow so as not to overflow it over sides.
Tips
- Choose sweet potatoes that are uniform in size so the pieces bake evenly.
- Cut your marshmallow in half if you don't want to use a whole one on each piece.
- Use real maple syrup, not maple-flavored pancake syrup.
- Watch your marshmallows as they broil because they brown up quickly and will burn just as quickly.
- Sweet Potatoes have orange flesh that gets soft and sweet when cooked, while yams have a yellow flesh that is more like a regular potato. Make sure to get the right kind.
- Use raw or toasted pecans. If you toast the pecans, toast them separately because they go on after the marshmallows have broiled. And the pecans would burn if they were broiled at the same time as the marshmallows.

Recipe Notes
Tip: Lay out sweet potato rounds on your baking sheet to determine how many will fit on it before mixing them with the other ingredients. Sweet potatoes can vary in size, so this will help to get the right topping/sweet potato ratio.
