I hope you love today's post. I have been so very hard at work finishing up my office/studio makeover sponsored by Joss and Main and I am beyond excited to share it with you today! This is going to be the first of a few posts because I just did way too many projects to include all of the details in one post. So, stay tuned!
It seems like we have never fully utilized our home office space. I am not sure why, but it probably has something to do with it never really being finished. I have changed things around here and there, but never really created that pretty and functional space that we actually wanted to spend time in. It had mostly become just a random, weird catch all space. But now I love it!
Here is the before:
And the after:
In person, it feels SO much bigger than it did before. And it obviously has so much more functionality!
The room has kind of an awkward shape, so laying out furniture has always been a bit of a challenge. I loved my old desk (it is actually my college desk that I found at a thrift store), but it just didn't seem to function the way that I needed it to in the space. Instead, I opted to go for a round table and upholstered chairs from Joss and Main. This gave me a big workspace as well as ample space for my littles to pull up a chair and color too.
One of the biggest needs I had for my office/studio was storage. I am one of those weird people that has a a crazy messy creative side, and simultaneously craves order and organization. I am constantly trying to find the balance. The ceilings are super high in here, so I knew that if I wanted to add any storage to the room without impeding much on the workspace, I would need to build up and utilize that extra wall space. I thought it would be fun to build shelves for wooden storage boxes for a sort of apothecary cabinet feel. The hubbs and I started by painting the walls (sherwin williams match of revere pewter) and then hung shelves over an old, dirty antique cabinet that I painted to match (more on that in a future post). The room is a weird shape, so the shelves sit in a kind of alcove.
I grabbed these boxes from Joss and Main as well and it saved me a lot of time not having to build them. I will have a full tutorial on them later, but they came raw and I stained them and added the hardware. I think they were actually children's toy storage cubes, but I will have all of the info for you in the tutorial post. I still need to go through and label all of the boxes, but I am determined to go through all of my crap and weed some of it out to donate before I organize it nicely in these boxes! Wish me luck!
There is a similar type of alcove on the adjoining-ish (there is a small wall with a door in between) wall. I painted a CD cabinet to put there with lamps, a mirror and other decor. I added the label tag hardware to it too, and I will be keeping things that I use most frequently in these drawers- adhesives, scissors, glue gun, paper cutter, etc. I will be filling those labels out when I have my big organization party (with the big boxes too). Needless to say, my hubby is pretty excited for me to clear my storage off of the shelves in the garage.
I thought about filling the top of the refinished antique cabinet with jars to store ribbons, etc., but I ended up sticking a couple on the table and instead hung paper rolls (tutorial later). I LOVE them there! My kids and I use paper rolls all of the time so they will be very handy.
I loved this dress form from Holly over at Vintage Farm Furniture, and I just had to purchase it. I love the gorgeous color and weathering of the fabric. I stole the chalkboard out of my entryway and pulled it in here. It turned out to be the perfect size for this spot, so now I need to find something different for the entryway. For the curtains, I just made them from white Linen from the fabric store. I left the selvage un-hemmed because I love the way it is almost a little ruffly (plus, it was just easier!).
The chandelier was also a Joss and Main find. The chandy that was in here before was one the builder hung in here originally and wasn't really my style, so I was pretty excited to hang this giant gorgeous girl. Thank goodness for a handy and patient hubby.
I wanted it to feel like an inviting and cozy space so most of the accessories and pillows I just pulled from around our house and She Shed. I am still trying to decide what I want long term in here for pillows, but I like these for now.
So, I guess it is definitely an unconventional office/studio/workroom multi-use space and I love how it came together. What do you think?
