The perfect welcome to Fall- Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls- are festive, delicious, and easy to make. It will be your favorite Autumn breakfast recipe!
Our nights are starting to get cooler and crisper and I couldn't be happier for Fall to be coming. I love everything about Autumn- the food, the decorating, the pumpkins, the beautiful rich colors, and the fun family time. I thought I would kick off my Fall posts with a yummy little recipe that I think you will love- Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls! If you like cinnamon rolls, you need to try this one. It is the perfect combination of cinnamon, flavorful apples, soft bread and creamy buttery icing.
I will also be sharing a bunch of other must-try apple recipes at the end of this post as part of my Taste of the Season series. I gathered a few friends and we will be sharing some of our favorite recipes throughout the Fall and Christmas seasons, so I hope you come back and visit!
This Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls recipe is a twist on my mom's famous cinnamon rolls. Growing up, my mom's cinnamon rolls were well known and well loved by every one of my (and my siblings') friends. This recipe takes her delicious (and huge!) rolls and adds another layer of flavor with baked apple goodness. This one is a keeper for sure.
Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls
Ingredients
Rolls
- 2 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 1/2 T active dry yeast
- 2 T sugar
- 1/8 c. oil
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 6 cups flour + extra for flouring surface
Filling
- 1 T butter
- 5 apples
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 1/3 c. brown sugar
- 6 T butter- room temperature important
Icing
- 3/4 stick butter room temperature
- 6 cups powdered sugar
- 5 1/2 T whole milk
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Instructions
-
In a small bowl, mix warm water, yeast and 2 T sugar. Set aside and let yeast proof. In a mixing bowl (I use a Bosch), mix the 1/2 cup sugar, salt and oil. Add yeast mixture and mix. Begin to add the flour, 1 cup at a time until the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl. Knead in mixer for 5 minutes. Dough should still be soft, but should be holding together well. Cover and let rise in a warm, dry place until double in size (I pull the dough hooks out of my bowl before rising).
-
While dough is rising, peel and chop apples. Sauté them in the 1 T butter until slightly softened and beginning to become golden brown.
-
Once dough has risen, dump out onto a floured surface. Roll out until about 16 x 20″. Spread room temperature (not melted!) butter over the entire slab of dough. I use my hands for this part because it is just easier. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle apples over the cinnamon and sugar. Roll up dough and cut into 12 slices. I use the dental floss technique (google it- it really works the best!). Place rolls evenly spaced on a cookie sheet and let rise in a warm oven until nice and plump (about 20 minutes or so in 195 degree oven). Leave cinnamon rolls in the oven and set temperature to 350 degrees. Bake for 25- 30 minutes until nice and golden brown.
-
While cinnamon rolls are cooling slightly, mix together Icing. Whip butter, powdered sugar, whole milk and vanilla until nice and smooth and delicious. Smother rolls with icing while warm (not super hot) and enjoy!
These apple pie cinnamon rolls are perfect for this Fall (or even Christmas) season. I know you will love them!
