One of the things that I had envisioned for my little She Shed from early on was turning the gable into a bookshelf. I thought it would be such a fun way to accentuate the architecture of my cute little 10'x12' TuffShed, as well as make use of an otherwise unusable space.
We installed the beadboard onto the studs (see details HERE), so there was a 4" lip between the top of the woodwork and the back of the wall. My hubby cut a 1"x8"x10" board down so it would fit into this lip and tacked it down with screws on the right and left side studs for extra support.
For the backside, we used large, heavy duty L-brackets from The Home Depot, secured from the top. I chose to have him secure them from the top (instead of the underside) so they would hide behind the books. He did this on each of the studs and the shelf ended up being very sturdy, which we needed since books are heavy. I caulked the seams to make it nice and polished.
To style the books, I wanted it to have a casual and almost whimsical feel, so I alternated stacking them in different ways. All of the bindings are facing the back and some are torn off to create a nice, neutral color scheme with a lot of texture. I think this neutral collection, as opposed to colorful book bindings, accentuates the shed living space instead of taking attention away from it.
The gable bookshelf is one of my very favorite things about this space.
