I am a little embarrassed to say that I have had this chair in my garage for about 5 years now! I loved the caning and the shape of it, and have been meaning to give it a makeover... but it kept getting knocked to the end of my to-do list. Years later, and a She Shed project with a perfect little spot for it, now it is finally finished!
Here are the before and after pictures. Brace yourself.
To start, we unscrewed the seat and removed the cushion. Then I used a light gray chalk paint that I had on hand to paint a couple of coats on the chair. Once it was dry, I lightly distressed it to let some of the original wood show through. I cleaned the cushion the best I could and then recovered it with a light gray upholstery fabric that I picked up at JoAnn Fabrics. I just pulled it tight around the cushion and stapled it on the the underside. Then we just screwed the seat back to the base.
I think there is a pretty big difference between the before and the after! I should have done it a long time ago! What do you think?

I love your chair makeover. I would have never known it was made over- looks so new and modern. I especially love you she shed and would die for one. The books and the ladder are right up my alley.

The distressed milk paint looks great - it really changes the whole look of the chair - love it!

It looked like white on my screen but really like idea of light gray. Maybe I could use some of paint used to paint living room to make some chalk paint to paint an old chair that's been hanging around in our shed. Glad you painted the caning also and recovered the seat cushion, great job and it looks like new chair. You have inspired me to work on my chair. It's all wood so no seat to cover unless I make a seat pattern and use foam to make seat cushion, love that idea also make sitting on chair more comfy.
Enjoy your new chair all gussied up. Happy week
Trish
