I really loved the shape of this birdcage {not the color} when I first saw it and I thought it had really great potential. I found it at TJMaxx, and usually I wouldn't purchase something brand new that needed a makeover. But, I thought the size and shape would just be perfect for the space... so I went for it.
I decided to spray it with this dark slate brown to cover the silver mesh parts, but I ended up really loving the color for the whole thing. I used spray paint that I got at Lowes. Here is a picture if you are interested in purchasing it for your project. It is NOT the color on the lid... it is Better! It is darker and more of a slate brown than a chocolate brown. It is "Anodized Bronze" by Rustoleum.
After I applied two even coats of spray paint, I wanted to distress it a bit to add character, but I didn't want the blue to show through. I like the look that some darker woods and metals get when they get a white galvanized film with age. I decided to replicate that with this piece.
First, I made up some of my homemade chalk paint~ recipe here.
Then I just used my fingers to glob and smear it around the edges, making sure to get it into all of the cracks. I did small sections at a time. You don't want the paint to dry before the next step, and chalk paint dries quickly.
Tip: Don't worry about it being perfect!
Then all you have to do is go back with a wet rag {I used baby wipes} to remove some of it and smear a thin layer around the rest. I love how it stays settled into the cracks and leaves a film on the rest. You can leave as much, or as little, of this film on your piece as you would like. The chalk paint comes off fairly easily, so if you mess up, just rub it all the way off with your wet rag and start over.
Here is a close up of the finished piece. It only took me about 10 minutes to do the whole thing!
I love how it turned out! It adds so much texture and interest. And, I love that it is distressed differently than all of the other pieces.
